How to Optimize Permalinks of Your WordPress Blog
Posted on June 19th, 2009 by Aditya under Blogging Tips
Today, I recieved an email a guy was asking to write a Tutorial on Optimizing Permalinks of WordPress Blog. I thought it’s quite a good topic to right about and it will help many readers of my blog.
I’ve seen many people asking questions like:
Why my SERP ranking is low?
Why I get less traffic on my blog?
If you haven’t optimized your permalinks this sort of problem definatly occures.
When users or SE’s check your link they see old link structure p=1 p=2 etc. If you make them good you will surely get better SERP rankings and you will fetch more traffic too!
Example of a poor link is
domain.com/p=2 – You cant see whats the link about
Example of a good link is
domain.com/title-of-the-post/ this includes your keywords also and we can determine whats the url about
So how to change your linking structure?
1. Login to your WordPress account.
2. Navigate to the dashboard.
3. Options > Permalinks.
4. Check the “Custom” structure
5. Insert – /%postname%/
6. Update your .htacess file
Following these steps will solve your problem. It will help you to get more traffic from search engines. If you face any problem you can ask for help by commenting below.

If you really only want insert just postname in permanlinks you should just give %postname% , don’t need to insert slash in it

i think just put a post name doesn’t work properly, how if we use category become a keyword in our link, and the permanlinks become /%category%/%postname%.html it will look likes if the category is seo-tips than the category become keyword as “seo tips “

By putting just /%postname%/ works prefectly. It’s on you that you want to put html at back or not.
All the top blogger do not put .html at back of that code. Usually nobody usethe code you are on about.
It’s always good if the category is your keyword because you are writing articles related to that only.

I used the permalinks, but one fine dayt the links stopped working and I just couldn’t get them to work. Had to revert back to a day/month/post name structure to get them to work.
